THE BOOK The Apple Lady was my mother. Dawn is my oldest daughter, but really my four children embodied in one. The apple stand is a real place on a farm in San Luis Obispo, California. I grew up on this farm pruning, thinning, picking and selling apples. Later I watched my children help the Apple Lady at the stand. People who visited the stand knew the Apple Lady for her hard work, cheery disposition and ever-present smile. Her grandchildren, however, knew her as teacher, comforter and ultimate friend. Gently she
guided them; completely she
loved them. This is her story and
their story—a snippet in time—
